Now that I have been living in Texas for a full 3 years (time really does fly) I’m finally beginning to feel like a true Texan, so when I heard a new restaurant was opening with “upscale Texas cuisine” I was extremely intrigued.
Billy Can Can was designed with 19th- century saloon vibes with some upscale industrial touches, bright dinning room with wrap around windows, rustic wood floors,a communal dining table, taxidermied animals and old photographs throughout the space. Located in the up and coming area Victory Park, this addition to the neighborhood is one of my favorites.
Me and my best friend decided to hold our weekly girls night at the hot new restaurant and we were not disappointed. We went on a Monday and didn’t make reservations but were kindly accommodated by the host, and were sat immediately. The cocktail menu had a selection of classic cocktails including a Pisco sour and Singapore sling and also some of their own “Saloon Signature cocktails” which was mostly bourbon inspired. I tend to stay away from brown liquor so I opted for a dirty martini with blue cheese olives which was Extra shaken and ice cold just how I like it (dirty martini drinkers know the difference).
The Texan menu was created by Chef Matt Ford, who was formerly head chef of CBD Provisions, so we knew we were in for a treat. Our server had a lot of knowledge on the menu and gave us some great suggestions. We started with the smoked fish dip served with Old bay chips, and the deviled eggs which came with an assortment of 6 different eggs including one with brown sugared bacon, pickled okra,smoked paprika and more! Both appetizers were to die for. Ordering our entrees was probably the biggest struggle for us because there was so many mouthwatering options. I was between the Lamb spare ribs and the roasted snapper. Our waiter suggested the snapper, so I went with it and was extremely satisfied with my choice. Served gumbo style with gulf shrimp, crawfish, hot links, over a bed of Texas Rice. Maddie, opted for the seafood chopped salad which was blue crab, shrimp, tomato, bacon, egg, pickled red onion, avocado, topped with green goddess dressing. Very filling, yet light enough for summer. Unfortunately my crop top I was wearing didn’t allow for room for dessert, but the menu was extremely tempting.
Overall we had a great time, and will definitely be back to try those lamb spare ribs. Check the App to see what to wear!
